Famous Volcanoes
Mount Vesuvius - when this volcano erupted in 79AD, it covered the city of Pompeii in ash.
Mount St. Helens - although volcanologists knew this American volcano was going to erupt, they didn’t foresee exactly how it was to happen. In 1980, a strong earthquake caused the volcano to explode sideways, firing ash and lava at 300 mph which landed fifteen miles away. Fifty-seven people were killed and the ash cloud was so dense that thick black rain coated residents of three states.
Mauna Loa - this is said to be the world’s largest volcano as well as one of the most active. Situated on Hawaii’s Big Island, its name actually means Long Mountain and its summit is almost 14,000 feet high.
Eyjafjallajokull - in 2010, this Icelandic volcano erupted, and released tons of volcanic ash into the air. Flights had to be diverted or cancelled for days, and it is believed that the event cost the airline industry more than a billion dollars.
Mount Pelée - When this volcano on the Caribbean island of Martinique erupted in 1902, it killed almost thirty thousand people. The explosion was particularly violent, combining ash and a fiery cloud of gas. Since then, this particular kind of eruption is called pelean.
Nevado del Ruiz - although in volcanic terms, Nevado del Ruiz’s 1985 eruption was fairly small, it caused huge mudslides which unleashed destruction on a terrible scale, leading to the deaths of 23,000 people.
Mount Fuji - this beautiful snow-capped volcano overlooking the Japanese city of Tokyo last erupted in 1707, burying the city in ash. Although it is still active, geologists say there is only a small risk of another violent eruption.
Mount Etna - situated on the island of Sicily, Etna is the tallest active volcano in Europe and has been releasing its magma for around half a million years. Amazingly, Etna has been seen to blow smoke rings into the air from time to time!
Popocatépetl - thought to be dormant until it started spewing gas in 1991, this Mexican volcano is thought to be three quarters of a million years old.
Kilimanjaro - not only is this dormant Tanzanian volcano the highest mountain in Africa, but it is also the tallest freestanding volcano on the planet. It is a popular destination for brave tourists wishing to scale its peak, which stands 5895 metres above sea level.
